On May 26, 2018, ACPR awarded certificates to 33 Tamil-speaking journalists from the North for completion of a 5-month program designed to build their skills and capacity around investigative journalism. Through a combination of expert-driven workshops and equipment provision, this program was aimed at improving the quality and quantity of investigative journalism coming out of the North.
The project aimed to empower participants to think and engage beyond the traditional practices of Tamil media in the region and to be able to produce work outside the confines of their employers’ editorial lines. This means both embracing new or alternative media and technology, but also incorporating a deeper level of critical analysis in their journalistic output.
Workshop topics included advanced investigative journalism practises, use of GIS mapping, the role of journalists in accountability processes, podcasts, videography, photography, use of technologies and social media, how to better use video to capture and report on human rights violations, etc.
This project was designed in consultation with Jaffna Press Club and Tamil Guardian.
